Terms of service

By using nrvchess.com or the NRV Chess app you agree to these terms and our privacy policy.

  1. NRV Chess is a chess training service, free while in preview. Analysis, ratings and explanations are generated automatically, by a chess engine and by an AI model (Anthropic's Claude), and may contain errors.
  2. You must be at least 13 to use NRV Chess. If you are under the age of majority where you live, a parent or guardian should agree to these terms with you.
  3. You need a free account to play. Use an email address you can receive mail at, keep your password to yourself, and tell us at support@nrvchess.com if you think someone else is using your account. You can delete your account at any time from your profile.
  4. Don't abuse the service: no automated or bulk requests, no attempts to break or overload it, and no using it for assistance during rated or competitive games on other sites.
  5. We may change, suspend or discontinue features, and may block access or close accounts that break these terms.
  6. The service is provided “as is”, without warranties, and to the extent the law allows we are not liable for indirect or consequential losses arising from it. Nothing here limits rights you have under consumer law that can't be limited.
  7. You may link only a Lichess account that is your own, by signing in to it on lichess.org. Don't link, or try to import the games of, anyone else's account. If a newer sign-in links the same Lichess account to another NRV Chess account, that link replaces yours.
  8. Imported games come from Lichess and depend on its availability and terms. We may limit, pause or stop imports (for example how many games we import, or how often), and we analyze only the opening of each imported game.
  9. NRV Chess is not affiliated with or endorsed by lichess.org or Chess.com. Their names belong to their owners and identify the sites whose data you choose to link.
  10. NRV Chess is run by Nathan Vucovich. These terms are governed by the laws of the State of North Carolina and applicable US federal law, without regard to conflict-of-law rules, and disputes go to the state or federal courts in North Carolina. If you use NRV Chess as a consumer outside North Carolina, you keep any protection the law where you live gives you that can't be waived, including the right to bring a claim in your local courts. Before going to court, please email us so we can try to sort it out.
  11. We may update these terms; the date above shows when. Significant changes will be announced in the app before they apply.

Open-source notices

Chess analysis is performed on our servers with Stockfish (GPL-3.0), source available at github.com/official-stockfish/Stockfish. The Archivo and Newsreader typefaces are used under the SIL Open Font License 1.1. The icons, the NRV mark and every chess piece except the knight are our own work.

Knight

The knight is adapted from the knight in Colin M.L. Burnett's “cburnett” chess pieces, which he licensed under GFDL, BSD and GPL. We use it under the BSD 3-clause license:
